- Zhdanov, Political General Andrey
1896–1948
Zhdanov was one of the members of the party secretariat and was sent to Leningrad to assist Marshal VOROSHILOV, as the political member of the Military Soviet. He set up the City Defense Soviet without orders from STALIN and was dismissed with Voroshilov when it became apparent that they had failed to contain the German advance. He was overshadowed during the war by MALENKOV. After the war he became second in command to Stalin.
